A native of Bloomington-Normal, David graduated from Bloomington High School in 1968 before serving in the U.S. Marine Corp from 1969-1971. After an honorable discharge, he attended Illinois State University and graduated in 1975 with a Bachelors Degree in Business. While attending college David honed is skills working as a carpenter. In 1976 entered into a career as a general contractor specializing in new construction and remodeling. In 1979, David relocated to Phoenix, AZ building for Pulte Homes. In 1980 David returned to Bloomington where he married his wife, Kathy and began Long Custom Building
