1975 am Institut für Informatik III der Universität Karlsruhe (TH) als Lehrstuhl „Planungs- und Programmiertechniken für Prozessrechner“ gegründet, ging hieraus das Institut für Prozessrechentechnik und Robotik hervor. Nach Prof. Ulrich Rembold (1975-1997), Prof. Heinz Wörn (1997-2016) hat seit 2017 Prof. Torsten Kröger die Professur am IPR inne.
