A Autarquia do Ensino Superior de Garanhuns (AESGA) foi criada como instituição municipal pela lei nº 2.174, de 23/08/1985, com a finalidade de agregar a já existente Faculdade de Ciências da Administração de Garanhuns (FAGA), e permitir a criação de outras instituições de educação superior (IES), buscando atender a vocação da cidade, conhecida em âmbito estadual, como um município pólo educacional.
